The Pressure Is Off. God’s Promises Claim Us

Blessed be the Lord who has given rest to his people Israel, according to all that he promised. Not one word has failed of all his good promise. 1 Kings 8:56

For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding “Yes!” And through Christ, our “Amen” (which means “Yes”) ascends to God for his glory. 2 Corinthians 1:20

God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through? Numbers 23:19

Heavenly Father, in the journey of getting older, growing in grace, and heading Home, thank you for being always faithful, uber-kind, and tenaciously committed to our joy and freedom.

Recently I’ve been thinking about your promises, so generously and copiously given in your Word. You have made so many promises—commitments pregnant with hope, and you will fulfill every one of them. The burden and pressure isn’t on us to claim your promises; but to realize how wondrously and comprehensively your promises claim us.

You’re not a passive god waiting to be programmed by us; you are our heavenly Father, sovereignly ruling and generously redeeming. You enthrone and dethrone kings at your bidding. You give and you take away—blessed be your name. Blue skies and dark clouds equally call you Lord. Prosperity and suffering both bow the knee to you.

Father, thank you for beginning the good work of redemption in us, and in your cosmos, a work you will complete through Jesus. Indeed, all of your promises direct our gaze away from ourselves, to Jesus, in whom they all find their guarantee and fulfillment. Because of Jesus, faith, not fear, is always the order of the day—resting, not wresting; worship, not worry; bended knees, not furrowed brows.

Because the gospel is true, delight, not doubt, is to fill our hearts—adoration, not anxiety; singing, not sighing; lifting our hands in praise, not wringing hands in uncertainty. Father, thank you for being such a wonderful promise maker and promise keeper. So very Amen we pray, in Jesus’ triumphant and transforming name.
