And when they [Joseph and Mary] had performed everything according to the Law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him. Luke 2:39–40

Lord Jesus, everything connected to you reveals beauty, one way or another, including the irony of this passage. Joseph and Mary were faithful and loving parents, helping you grow up and become strong. After you were born, they did “everything required by the Law of the Lord” on your behalf.

But little did they realize, you were born to fulfill “everything required by the Law of the Lord” for them, and for us. Hallelujah… the Lord of Lords, who made the world, is none other than the Lamb of God who has taken away the sins of the world. Thank you, Lord Jesus, thank you.

Our hearts sing and soar, as we reflect upon your great humility, perfect obedience, and sacrifice on the cross. You didn’t come to destroy the law, but to fulfill it. What we could never do, you’ve done for us. What we could never be, you became for us. The law demands a righteousness and a beauty that are freely and fully ours in the gospel.

Your last words from the cross, “It is finished,” are our first words of peace and freedom. Our lives are now hidden in you, rooted in your love, and enveloped in your grace. There’s nothing left to prove, nothing more we really need, nothing greater in the universe. We are yours, Hallelujah, we are yours.

And by the same grace you saved us, you’re now changing us. Jesus, what will this look like in 2018? In what ways are we not as free, whole, and healthy as you intend?  What are we holding onto it’s time to release? What grudges, shame, and idols need to go? Free us from our nagging unbelief, pestering fears, and lack of trust, Lord. Show us how to live and love to your glory, in the almost-here New Year. So very Amen we pray, in your most glorious and gracious name.
