Suffering Is a Sign We Love Jesus, Not Lack Faith

“Dear friends, don’t be surprised at the fiery ordeal and hardships that have come on you—as though you’re being singled out for harsh treatment, or as though this is “pay back” time from God. Your Father is refining your faith and making you more like Jesus. So be at peace and rejoice, for you are participating in Christ’s sufferings—a life shaped by his cross, heart, and compassion. Be patient, for when Jesus returns, all suffering will be over, and your rejoicing is going to become overjoy.”  Paraphrase of 1Pet.4:12–13

Lord Jesus, this portion of your Word comes like a heavenly hug and heart corrective this May Thursday. Many of us were taught suffering and hardship only happen because of a lack of faith, or disobedience on our part. So it’s a relief to know that our “fiery ordeals” aren’t for our punishment, but for our purification. To suffer is normal; to suffer well is to love you and desire Christlikeness more than we crave a hassle free, painless, predictable life.

Your death on the cross was a once-and-for-all suffering—perfectly securing our complete salvation, and consummate healing. And you are now present wherever there is injustice and disease, brokenness and suffering. Embolden us to join you there, fellowship with you there, and serve with you there (Phil.3:10). May our suffering intensify our compassion, focus our prayers, and be a source of encouragement to fellow sufferers. Give us joy in our tears and hope when life hurts.

The Day of no more suffering IS coming (Rev. 21:1–5)—the Day when your glory will cover the earth and our healing will be complete. What a Day of rejoicing that will be. Until then, give us all the grace and power we will need to live and love to your glory, Jesus. So Very Amen.
