“The One enthroned in heaven laughs…” (Ps.2:4) “A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found. But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity. The wicked plot against the righteous and gnash their teeth at them; but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he knows their day is coming.” (Ps.37:10–13)

Heavenly Father, I love my wife’s laugh, and I love to hear toddlers giggle. And I love to experience tear-producing guffaws and horse-laughter with friends—not at anyone’s expense, but for everyone’s joy. But all of us especially look forward to the Day when we will hear your unfiltered laugh—a laughter that currently fills the courts of heaven and the chambers of eternity. Indeed, there’s no consternation or vexation in heaven; just peace and joy over the unfolding of your perfect plan, written with the ink of your grace.

Abba, please make your joy, merriment, and triumph over evil more real to us than ever. We are grateful for your promise that in “a little while” all wickedness will be gone forever. Selfishly, and understandably, we wish you’d give us the year and month when this promise will be completely fulfilled. That would be awesome.

But thank you for giving us the date it was fully secured—when Jesus died in our place and was raised for our justification. The devil was defeated (Col.2:15), and evil was given an expiration date. Demons increasingly tremble (James 2:19), and you laugh even louder.

This world—your world, Father, is more pregnant with glory than it’s filled with evil. May your joy be our strength, your promises be our confidence, and your Story be our mission. So Very Amen.
