The Stable-less Grace-Full Account of Jesus’ Birth

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth… Out of his fullness we have all received grace upon grace.” John 1:14–16

Lord Jesus, there’s no Mary or Joseph, stable or manger, shepherds or angels in John’s account of your birth. But you are there, front and center, with the superabundance of your grace. Hallelujah, what a Savior you are!

You are mighty to save, and quick to redeem; humble in your birth, and exalted in your reign; dispenser of our joys, and sovereign over our pain; fully present with us, and preparing to return for us; working in all things for our good, and ruling over every king on the earth.

We should sing, “Joy to the World” year-round, for you are presently ruling the world with your grace and truth—making all things new and beautiful. As the Gospel runs from heart to heart and nation to nation, you are making “your blessings flow, far as the curse is found.”

From the bottomless ocean of the Gospel, we keep receiving grace upon grace upon grace. We’re robed in your righteousness, beloved of our Father, and sealed by the Spirit. Joy to the world, indeed, and to us. So very Amen we pray, in your great and grace-full name.
