We Know This “Stuff.” Let’s Believe, Live, and Speak It

“Kind words are like honey (Prov.16:24).

“A wise tongue brings healing” (Prov. 12:18).

“Rash words are like sword thrusts” (Pov.12:18)

“The soothing tongue is a tree of life” (Prov.15:4).

“The mouth speaks what fills the heart “ (Matt. 12:34).

“A well-instructed tongue … sustains the weary” (Isa. 50:4)

Lord Jesus, first and foremost, these Scriptures make us think of you. Your heart is gentle and lowly (Matt.11:29), so no wonder your words are always grace-seasoned, life-giving, and heart-righting. Even your rebukes give us encouragement and hope.

You aren’t just gracious with “bruised reeds and smoldering wicks.” You are also merciful when, like Jonah, we are pouty, angry, and self-absorbed; or like Job, confused by your ways and tired of life; or like Martha, incredulous and disappointed you didn’t show up on our timetable (Jn.11:21).

You spoke our world into existence and sustain everything by the power of your word (Heb.1:3). So we are confident in asking you to “speak” kindness, gentleness, and compassion deep into our hearts. Which simply means, Jesus, fill our hearts with yourself—be “formed in us” more fully (Gal.4:19). For our hearts are the factory of our thoughts and the fountain of our words, so fill our hearts to overflowing with your truth, goodness, and beauty, Lord.

When we’re like Balaam’s ass, we’re determined to curse not bless, “mess” with us by your Spirit. Almost like on the day of Pentecost, bring a flow of words through us filled with your praise, and help and healing for others. Hurt people don’t have to hurt other people. We can bring our hurt to you and your kindness to others. Grant us quick humility and repentance when we choose otherwise. Thank you for your patience with us, Jesus. So Very Amen
