“They will be my people, and I will be their God. I will give them singleness of heart and action way, and they will worship me with awe and affection forever. This will benefit them and their children. I will never stop doing good to them for I will make an everlasting covenant with them.” Jer. 32:38-40
Lord Jesus, what shall we say about this passage? Mind-boggling, heart-overwhelming, “circuit-board frying”? These verses are simultaneously a peace-banquet, grace-lottery, and hope-haven. This one promise is pregnant with everything we will ever need: You will never stop doing good to us.
We know you and your Word well enough to know that by “good” you don’t mean you will only do “cushy,” comfy, easy-peasy stuff. For you are our glorious Savior, not our personal masseur and concierge. You are making us like yourself—and that alone presupposes growth pains. There is no greater “good” than to know one Day we will be as 100% like you.
So, Jesus, as the heart and heartbeat of the “New Covenant,” we know when you say, “Trust me, this is for your good” we can trust you without qualification or hesitation. And when you say to us, “You will understand later,” we know you’re not spinning or buying time. And when you say, “I’m working in all things for your good,” there are no exceptions to “all things.” Hallelujah, and thank you.
Jesus, free us from our puny, self-centered, idolatrous definitions of “good.” We want you more than we want control. We want your glory more than we want our way. We want what you mean by “good” more than we want our fantasies, daydreams, or even our “godly wants.” So Very Amen.
