Two new episodes of the Word Matters podcast are up this week.

  • In the first, Brandon Smith and I discuss the Rich Man and Lazarus. Is it a parable? Is it primarily about heaven and hell?
  • In the second, Jen Wilkin joined us to discuss what Peter meant when he described women as “weaker vessels.”
  • You can subscribe to the podcast here: iTunes | Android | RSS

I also joined Dr. Jason Allen, host of Preaching and Preachers, to discuss “The Pastor as Writer.”

Kindle Deal: Fear and Faith: Finding the Peace Your Heart Craves by Trillia Newbell. $0.99.

Seven of the best deals I came across this week:

1. Christianity Today – Inside Emanuel AME Church One Year After the Charleston Shooting. Don’t miss the photography and expert reporting on this church that became both a scene of horror and hope.

2. Shot fired: Greg Forster calls the Benedict Option the “politics of resentment.”  Carl Trueman shoots back. This conversation is just getting started.

3. Trillia Newbell – Politics Aren’t Worth Your Friendships. A good reminder in the midst of heated political debates.

4. Bart Barber – Yes, Muslims Really Qualify for Religious Freedom. Bart demonstrates the long Baptist pedigree of promoting religious liberty for all, even Muslims.

5. Ryan Reeves continues his series through my picks for Top 5 Most Important Theologians. This week, it’s Thomas Aquinas. Who was he and why does he matter?

6. I recommend Jonathan Leeman’s – Why Abortion Makes Sense, and then Frederica Mathewes-Green on “when abortion suddenly stopped making sense.” Two different angles to approach the logic of the pro-choice movement.

7. Politico – How an Outsider President Killed a Party. The Whigs chose power over principles when they nominated Zachary Taylor in 1848. The party never recovered.
