Cohort Description

Michael Morales will introduce lay people, students, teachers, and pastors to the structure, major themes, and theology of the Book of Exodus. Taking a literary approach, participants will learn how the narratives of Exodus employ key words, word-play, literary structure, and other rhetorical devices to lead readers into layers of meaning, an approach that will shape the way one reads the rest of the Bible—the Torah, Historical Books, and Gospels.

This course will set Exodus within the literary context of the Torah, and interpret its content in relation to its original function in the life of Israel. We will explore Exodus as the foundation for theology proper—how the LORD God revealed himself through the events of the exodus and Israel’s stay at Mount Sinai. Along the way, students will explore Moses’ divine training for leadership of Israel, how the wilderness journeys functioned as preparation for Israel’s embrace of the Sinai covenant, the theological and symbolic significance of the Tabernacle, and much more.

We will trace major themes into the rest of the Hebrew Scriptures and explore how the authors of the New Testament understood the Son’s advent within the lens of the anticipated new exodus led by Messiah.

Session One
Israel in “exile”

This lecture will provide an orientation to the book of Exodus by exploring the historical and theological context for Israel’s redemption out of Egypt, and offering an overview of the book’s literary structure.

Session Two
Moses’ twofold mission

In this lecture we will survey Exodus 2-6, uncovering the dominant concerns in Moses’ early life and how God used these years to train him to become Israel’s great leader and guide.

Session Three
Knowing the LORD

This lecture will consider the logic and theology of the plagues narrative, including the sea crossing (Exod. 7-15), and how the signs and wonders functioned to unveil the Name and glory of the LORD.

Session Four
Sinai covenant

In this lecture we will look at the theological heart of the covenant relationship between the LORD and Israel (Exod. 19-24) as well as the role of the wilderness journeys leading to Sinai (Exod. 16-18).

Session Five
The Merciful One

The lecture will survey the episode of the golden calf and Moses’ mediation (Exod. 32-34), found at the center of the tabernacle section of Exodus, and how the divine response unveiled the ultimate significance of the LORD’s Name.

Session Six
Dwelling with God

In this lecture, we will survey the symbolism and theology of the tabernacle (Exod. 25-40), and how they relate to the scriptural story.

L. Michael Morales (PhD, Trinity College, University of Bristol) is professor of biblical studies at Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He is the author of Who Shall Ascend the Mountain of the Lord?: A Biblical Theology of the Book of Leviticus and Exodus Old and New: A Biblical Theology of Redemption. His most recent publication is a two-volumed commentary on Numbers: Numbers 1-19, Numbers 20-36 (Apollos OT Commentary).

Session One
Israel in “exile”
