Jerram Barrs discusses Colossians 2:20-23, warning against ascetic practices that seem wise but lack true spiritual value. He explains that self-imposed regulations and severe self-discipline may appear to be wise and devout, but they do not address the sinful nature of the heart. True wisdom and transformation come from a relationship with Christ, not from mere external practices.

Jerram Barrs (MDiv, Covenant Theological Seminary) is the founder and resident scholar of the Francis A. Schaeffer Institute at Covenant Theological Seminary, where he is professor of Christian studies and contemporary culture. He and his wife served on staff with L’Abri Fellowship in England for 18 years. Jerram and his wife, Vicki, have three sons and seven grandchildren.
