Stuhlmacher declares from the start that he is in the tradition of those who see great continuity between the Jesus of Nazareth and the Christ of faith. He readily identifies with other Tübingen scholars who have taken a similar line including Martin Hengel, Otto Betz and Rainer Riesner. This small volume contains three essays. The first is an overview of the question of the historical Jesus. Although I am very sympathetic with Stuhlmacher’s position, he frames the question in terms of the ongoing German discussion started by Käsemann et al., instead of some of the more recent work thriving in North America. This is partly because the book first appeared in German in 1988. The second chapter raises the question of why Jesus needed to die and the third examines the NT witness concerning the Lord’s Supper.
