THE PEOPLE CALLED: THE GROWTH OF COMMUNITY IN THE BIBLE

Written by Paul D. HansonReviewed By Nathan MacDonald

First published in 1988, this reprint comes with a new introduction. Hanson’s work is an exercise in biblical theology, though not a biblical theology. It traces the notion of community from the Exodus and the Patriarchal Period throughout the OT, Intertestamental period and NT. According to Hanson community in the Bible is a triadic notion—involving righteousness, compassion and worship. The serious theological concern of the work ensures this book continues to be a valuable resource. On the other hand, the espousal of traditional scholarly positions and the historical structure of the volume makes it look slightly dated.
